 What is al-Thara?

AL-THARA is a weekly review of scholarship, culture and literature on women's issues. Based in Syria, its goal is to provide a reliable resource of international, regional and local documents – for example, laws and conventions – concerning women. It also aims to monitor social ills and practices that violate rights and freedoms, especially those of women, as they are the most vulnerable and suppressed sector of Syrian society. The review tries to expose these problems and propose alternative courses of action.

AL-THARA is issued in both Arabic and English because it is intended to help create links between people – especially women – and experts in fields like law, sociology and psychology. Indeed, we look forward to a time when AL-THARA is a network for feminist activists not only in Syria , but in the whole Arab Region.

Thara  is issued by Etana Press, a Damascus-based publishing house. Etana produces materials and organizes activities aimed at raising civil awareness in Syria, particularly among younger segments of the population.

Etana employs a holistic approach in addressing social issues that combines theory and practice, as well as consciousness and social activism. Since its foundation over a year ago, Etana has been active in various fields.  It has facilited the visits of foreign journalists and academics to Syria, as well as organized a number of exhibitions and seminars to highlight social problems within Syrian society. Etana also conducts training workshops on facilitation, responsible journalism and web design, as part of a capacity-building strategy for formal and informal NGOs, students and public educators. By doing so, Etana seeks to fill the gap between public and private institutions in contributing to the development of a civic culture in Syria.
